How to Start a Room with One Antique Piece

Sometimes the best way to begin a room is with one piece that has a point of view. It might be an antique mirror, a painted chair, a vintage lamp, a chandelier, or a decorative object with a color you cannot stop thinking about.

Start by asking what the piece is giving you. Is it color? Shape? Age? Humor? Quiet? A strong silhouette? Let that answer guide the rest of the room.

How to build around it: repeat one color softly, balance the scale, add texture, and keep a little contrast. An old piece usually looks better when it is not surrounded only by other old pieces.

If the piece is delicate, give it something strong nearby. If it is formal, add something relaxed. If it is playful, pair it with something grounded.

The room does not need to match the antique. It needs to respond to it.
