What to Look for in One-of-One Vintage and Antique Pieces
One-of-one pieces are what make a room feel personal. They are the things that do not look ordered all at once: the old mirror, the odd little lamp, the painted chair, the piece that makes people ask where you found it.
When I am sourcing, I look for four things first: shape, surface, scale, and feeling.
Shape matters because a piece needs a strong silhouette. Surface matters because patina is what gives it depth. Scale matters because even the most beautiful object needs to work in a real room. And feeling matters because the best pieces have a little pull.
Condition does not always mean perfect. A repair, worn paint, age marks, or old surface can be completely acceptable when the piece still has integrity and charm.
The right vintage piece should feel discovered, not manufactured. That is the difference between a room that is furnished and a room that feels collected.
