What is it?
A French gilt-bronze surtout-de-table from the 19th century. This elegant centerpiece measures 3" high x 18.5" wide (over handles) x 9" deep. Originally used to anchor formal dining tables, surtouts were designed to hold flowers, fruit, or candles—transforming everyday meals into occasions worth remembering.
Where did it come from?
From the estate of a prominent Midwestern philanthropist whose collection spanned centuries of European decorative arts. This surtout was likely acquired during the family's Grand Tour travels in the early 20th century, when French bronzes of this quality were still found in the estates and ateliers of Paris. Made by foundries in the French capital during Napoleon III's Second Empire, when gilt-bronze ornament reached its most elaborate expression.
Why did I choose it?
The scale. At just three inches tall, it sits low enough not to obstruct conversation across the table—the mark of a well-designed surtout. The handles curve with the kind of proportion you only get from hand-chasing, not casting. And the gilt patina shows exactly where hands lifted it over generations of dinners that mattered.
Condition:
Honest wear to the gilding—rubbed at the high points, darker in the recesses. Minor verdigris in protected areas, evidence this piece has lived. The bronze is solid, the weight substantial. No repairs, no losses. A working centerpiece with another century in it.
Price: $1,050
