A long Renaissance-style bench in pine with carved lyre-form trestle legs and wrought iron stretcher, 20th century. Came from Auktionshuset Kolonn in Stockholm, where it had been consigned from a private collection — the kind of piece that spent decades at the foot of a bed or under a window in a formal entry. The proportions are what got me: low enough to tuck under a console, long enough to actually sit three people, and those scrolling volute legs have real sculptural presence without feeling heavy. The plank top shows honest use with stains, dings, and the kind of surface patina you can't fake.
Condition: Significant wear throughout consistent with age and use. Top shows water rings, dark staining, surface scratches, and minor edge losses. Original finish worn through in spots. Iron stretcher with surface rust and oxidation. Lyre legs structurally sound with minor chips to carved details. Stable and sturdy. This one's been used, and it shows.
Curator's note
Chosen for its patina, scale, and the way it can make a newer room feel collected over time.
